Our Hairs……
Our hair’s background.
The average human head has about 100,000 hair follicles. Each follicle will grow an average of about 20 individual hairs in a person’s lifetime. At any time, it may be normal for a person to lose as many as 50-100 (Average hair loss is about 100 strands a day) hairs a day and these usually show up on a comb or brush or at the bottom of the bathtub or sink especially after washing your hair. If you notice you are shedding hair excessively after combing or brushing, or if your hair is becoming thinner, you should consult with your primary care provider or a dermatologist (a physician who specializes in treating skin and hair problems). A doctor can determine if disease is present.
Who is affected by hair loss?
Hair loss affects men and women although it affects both differently.
Men can start showing signs of hair loss as early as the onset of puberty. By age 35, 35% of males are experiencing some sort of hair loss. In their lifetime, 65% of all males suffer the effects of hair loss. The majority of males suffering from hair loss have what is called Male Pattern Baldness. Here the hairline recedes and there is a “dome” at the back of the head where hair loss also occurs. It eventually looks like a horseshoe shaped ring of hair surrounding a bald spot on the top of the head.
Women may start to experience hair loss in their 30’s. Their hair loss becomes notably more pronounced in their 50’s, especially after menopause. Whereas men tend to have their hair loss concentrated at the top of their head, women tend to have an overall thinning of the hair.
So what actually does cause you to lose your hair?
There are a number of causes of hair loss common to both men and women. Among of them, DHL affect is the most important hair loss issue, which is the main cause of the Male and Female Pattern Baldness. Some other common causes of hair loss are:
- Medical treatment
- Disease or illness
- Medications (side effects)
- Excess Vitamin A or E
- Mechanical damage to the hair
Mechanical damage is caused by harsh treatment of hair. Coloring, using curling irons, corn rows, perms, and bleaching can all lead to hair loss. Most of these causes of baldness are reversible, as is Male Pattern Baldness if done correctly.
How to prevent hair loss?
There are some practices that you can do everyday to prevent hair loss:
- Eating a balanced diet and taking vitamin and mineral supplements to avoid losing hair due to a vitamin or iron deficiency.
- Avoiding hair treatments that can damage hair; this includes bleaching, hot rollers, frequent perming, hot curling irons, and repeated brushing and combing under hot hair dryers.
- Alternate hairstyles that put tension on hair, such as ponytails and braids, with looser hairstyles to avoid a constant pull that causes some hair loss.
- When the hair is wet, avoid brisk rubbing with a towel; blot the hair dry instead.
- Avoid vigorous combing and brushing the hair when it is wet, because its structure is more fragile then.
- The old recommendation to brush hair 100 strokes a day should be avoided, as this damages hair.
- Use wide-toothed combs and brushes with smooth tips.
